Welcome to lisaan masry, the home of the largest online dictionary of the Egyptian Arabic language. The dictionary provides both english-egyptian and egyptian-english translations, plus a thesaurus. It contains about 12,000 words, with nearly 20,000 word forms. There are also recordings of about 20% of the words, examples of word usage and sample dialogues. There is also a brief introduction to Egyptian Arabic grammar.
The dictionary was designed as a reference for foreigners who are interested in studying Egyptian arabic, but is equally useful for Egyptians who want to want to find or check english words.
The resources on this web site are provided completely free of charge for everybody to use, and the site contains no advertisements.
This is an Egyptian-English, English-Egyptian dictionary. You can display and search for egyptian words using european letters in either a pronounced or fully transliterated form, or in arabic letters with or without vowels (tashkyl). The transliterated form is a kind of half-way stage toward learning to read and write in arabic.
You can browse the dictionary online using the web-based versions, or download a Windows application to run on your computer.
There are two ways to using the dictionary online: the first is suitable for viewing on a full-size (laptop or desktop) computer, the second is optimised for use on mobile devices- iPhone, HTC etc. Both versions offer a fully browsable dictionary (alphabetical search) and a thesaurus (words grouped by meaning). The full version offers more comprehensive information and you can hear recordings of the words.
